Today is the start of Chinese New Year so Gong Hai Fat Choi!
The Chinese use the Lunar calendar. This works on a cycle of twelve years and each year is named after an animal. 2012 is the Year of the luckiest animal of all of them - the Dragon!
You'll see lots of red and gold around Chinese New Year because red is the colour of good luck and gold symbolises wealth. Small red envelopes are given to children and teenagers with money inside, and businesses usually give their employees bonuses in the same red envelopes.
There are also lots of firecrackers to scare away the mythical beast 'Nian' who, according to tradition, comes on the first day of the New Year to eat livestock, crops and children! As well as firecrackers, people put food outside their doors for Nian to eat.
Happy Chinese New Year to everyone on Rafi.ki!
