A group of scientists have published a report showing how timber practices and tree logging are not sustainable and they are worried about the destruction of the tropical forests around the world.
The world uses timber from trees in everything from furniture to jewellery and although some of this timber comes from sustainable forests, scientists fear that there are not enough useful trees in these forests to meet the demand for timber. Therefore, a lot of timber is taken from trees in forests that are hundreds of years old (these are often called ‘native forests’).
The scientists report was published today in the Biological Conservation journal and they said: “For nearly a decade, the nation has been warned that the volume of timber annually harvested from native forests was too high and, if unchecked, that timber stocks would be seriously depleted by 2012.”
One of Rafi.ki’s top users, Elizabeth L from the UK, has created a great discussion called ‘Rainforest biodiversity – what do you think?’ where you can post your thoughts on this important issue. Join in the debate and see what’s being said here
